Pixelcat Dolls

+ Sustainable Product Development

Since the 90’s there have been reports of mysterious disappearances of bees. The problem has gotten to such a dangerous level that entomologists have started warning us that we don’t have enough bees to maintain our countries pollination demands. And if the bees go they will take a lot of our ecosystem with them.

Pixelcat dolls is an experimental product development that seeks to tie products with social and environmental issues. The first pillow set was directed towards the fight against CCD (Colony Collapse Disorder). The idea was to take a designer product for kids, make it sustainably and then use it as an education opportunity for both child and parent. All pillows came with a bee charm bracelet, a brief and friendly story talking about CCD and a link directing to a site where more information could be found. Partial profit was to be donated toward the fight against CCD. To promote the pillows at Miami's art walks various compostable pots with seed paper and info of the project were hidden throughout the Wynwood area inviting people to check out the product during it's gallery exhibition at Wynwood Talks.

Future versions of the project included pillow sets directed towards a large variety of issues from gender discrimination and LGBT rights to fighting extreme poverty. The second phase of the project was directed towards fighting poverty in Haiti. The pillows were to be made by local artisans using local materials from the area and where meant to donate a partial profit back to Haiti. The plan was to create a full circle product that didn’t only talk about changing the world but that actually changed the world through its existence.
